Skinny Puppy
www.myspace.com/skinnypuppy
skinnypuppy.com
( ;D --> Drawing from the pioneering work of artists like Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire, and Suicide, the dark avant-industrial group Skinny Puppy formed in 1982 in Vancouver, British Columbia. Originally a duo comprised of former Images in Vogue drummer cEvin Key (born Kevin Crompton) and Nivek Ogre (aka Kevin Ogilvie), Skinny Puppy followed their debut cassette, Back and Forth, with the EP Remission, the first of many recordings with producer David "Rave" Ogilvie, in 1984. With a squsic uique sound of twisted, metaphorical lyrics combined with technoid madness, shock and terror aestethics with an dystopic, eerie feeling of hopelessness. Skinny Puppy are widely considered the founders of electro-industrial music; forming and cultivating the industrial sound that inspired bands such as Nine Inch Nails, KMFDM and Marilyn Manson.

www.metropolis-mailorder.com/product.php?prodnum=MET+870
( ;D --> In its nearly three decades of existence, Skinny Puppy has established itself as a groundbreaking innovative voice in the world of electronic music. Fearless in both its musical experimentation and voicing a stance on the issues of our times, the new album, Weapon, is no exception. This stunning new album stands as a commentary on that which it is named after, the Weapon, or more specifically, to the concurrent glorification of the gun culture and simultaneous horror at the devastation the gun can cause. Given this view, the pop undertones of the albums opening “wornin” and the compelling counterpoint of the vocals and lyrics seem to reflect our mass media homogenization of an instrument of death into an entertainment centerpiece. “illisiT" could then be focusing on the authoritarian control applied to us under the guise of protecting us from the criminal element. Though possibly it is from the view of the average citizen, arming themselves against the threat of each other. The more it is analyzed, the more it could be pondered on varying levels. Perhaps the classic Skinny Puppy sounds evident in the song “solvent” are a nod to not only the past, but to a bleak Orwellian future, cycle of the weapon leads only to power in the hands of those who have no fear of using it. Are we facing a 1984 dystopia filtered through a Kafkaesque lens? A world where the illusion of power given to the private citizen afforded ownership of a weapon distracts them from the Big Brother drones that watch overhead? Parallels could certainly be drawn from our own society to a track like “tsudanama”, where the ever building menace of the mechanized rhythms crashes over the listener in waves as the vocals at times seem to take the tone of the voice of protest, standing against the inevitable tide of the dystopian path of progress. Then does “plasiCage” implore the listener to take up the fight against a gun worship culture and the spiraling towards oligarchy? Or are the mournful tones “terminal” a funeral dirge for our society? Could the weapon be the gun, or the one who wields it? Is it in creating an arms race among the populace, or does it lie in the resulting authoritarian control given to those who are charged with protecting us from ourselves? Is it the power to profit from the cycle? Is it the singular act of speaking against the conditioning of our thoughts and actions?)

( ;D --> Daft Punk are an influential electronic dance duo formed by French producers Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo in Paris in 1993. Their music is a fusion of electronic styles including techno, house and disco that has since been described as 'French house'. The duo are protective of their physical identities and are usually depicted wearing masks or with their faces out of focus - this was initially through shyness, although the image of man-machines was in keeping with the electronic nature of their music. The band are also known for their videos, using the skills of acclaimed directors Spike Jonze ("Da Funk"), Michel Gondry ("Around The World"), and Roman Coppola ("Revolution 909").)

( ;D --> Up to this point, Mount Kimbie have sounded comfortable crafting intimate house party soundtracks or providing the score for a long bus ride home-- but the first single from their forthcoming album Cold Spring Fault Less Youth, "Made to Stray", is Mount Kimbie nudging their way toward the dancefloor, interested in filling space as much clearing room for it. Slathered in static and pulled forward by a military-esque beat, it eventually shakes off the fog, snapping into focus and adding soft bass thuds, echo-laden synth squiggles, and plaintive chords that stretch out in all directions. By the time the vocal comes in, you're hooked.)

The initial lineup also included Off & Gone's Phil Western and Mark Spybey of Dead Voices on Air, but has since been particularly fluid, with Key and Western being the only constant members following Goettel's death. Download's music has been described as post-industrial, drawing from the band's genesis as part of Skinny Puppy but also sharing common stylistic ground with such artists as Aphex Twin and Autechre. The primary instrumentation common throughout their albums is a blend of synthesizers and sampled instruments; the music is particularly centered on elements of percussion and rhythm. Other artists that have been involved are Genesis P. Orridge, Anthony Valcic, Bill Van Rooy, and Ken Marshall. Earlier releases frequently included vocal elements and lyrics, but since III (and Mark Spybey's departure in 1996) their work has been strictly instrumental.)

Analog squelches and percussive grooves blend seamlessly with elements of trance, noise, IDM, and post-industrial to create a beat driven epic. Centered, as with all Download releases, around a pillar of percussion and rhythm, LingAM stands as an enchanting sonic expression.)

Members shifted and the band broke apart after a gig in Germany in 2001. The 'originals' got together again in 2011 and formed '#366 A Life Lived' with a more experimental electro.
